This edition of Radio Nothing marks the 25th anniversary of the program on WPKN 89.5 FM in Bridgeport, CT. It is a strange coincidence that it worked out so that it is also the 2,500th edition. But then again, unplanned synchronicity seems to play a significant role in my life.
Even after all of this time and all these editions of the program, I still remain as excited as ever to have the opportunity to share interesting sounds and music with you. So, for now, the series does remain truly “endless and relentless.”
Undoubtedly, there will be many wonderful new things that will find their way into future editions of Radio Nothing. Yet, with this edition, it seems like a good idea to have journeyed back to the first edition of the program. To that end, Radio Nothing #2500 recreates the playlist from Radio Nothing #1 [originally broadcast on Monday, April 6, 1987, from 2h00 to 6h00]. The music is presented in the same sequence as the first edition, although the set groupings are probably not quite exactly the same as Radio Nothing #1. And, because current Radio Nothing editions are an hour shorter than in 1987, some material had to be left out.
As you can see from the playlist, virtually all of the selections were from my own collection of music and as such reflect my musical taste as it was in 1987 and much earlier in my life. As much as I’ve expanded my own cultural horizons through doing this show, I’d like to think that my fondness for a broad range of diverse and uncommon sounds was evident from the very first edition of Radio Nothing.
Even while celebrating the origins of this program, I wanted to feature something new within this edition of Radio Nothing, hence the inclusion of the last piece featured in set #6, a work by Istvan Peter B’Racz that was recorded as a live performance on April 5, 2012 in New Haven. The juxtaposition that occurs by playing it here immediately following a 1973 recording of music from 13th century France underscores what I’ve tried to bring to the airwaves ever since I’ve had the good fortune to be welcomed to WPKN by then-program director David Golden and through the support and friendship of so many WPKN colleagues and listeners.
Thank you for being part of it.
This playlist is divided into two sections: the first section is a listing of events as they occurred in the program; the second section is the source material (Cassettes, Compact Disks, LPs, etc.) in numerical order based on the Ref#. The Ref#s in the first section are linked to those in the second section, the list of source material, for quicker access. (To return to the first section after perusing the second, just scroll up the page – the "back" button in your browser is also likely to do the trick.)
The "Ref#" is a library number – either that of the WPKN library or of my personal collection or other source. Numbers in boldface like "7h05" mark (French notation) the starting time of a microphone break to provide listeners with information, news, weather, and other inane babbling.
The source listing includes the names of the performing artists; the title of the album; whether it was a CD, LP, cassette, etc.; the date of publication; the serial number; and label information such as (when available) addresses, telephone, fax numbers and links to e-mail and web sites. The label information is usually only as timely as the publication date of the source material – so you may have to do additional research on your own if this information is out of date.
